The Flatiron - Superstition Mountains

I started my hike at 7:51 AM. It then took me 2 hours and 25 minutes to reach the edge of the Flatiron. The time was 10:18 AM. After that I began my 1.2 mile hike around Peak 5024. Then I started back down at 12:22 PM, and I got back to my van at 2:25 PM. My hike was 6.9 miles, and it took me 6 hours and 33 minutes.

The hoodoos in the Superstition Mountains are largely sculpted from consolidated volcanic ash (tuff) from eruptions millions of years ago. The Apache people considered the Superstitions sacred, believing that the hoodoos were their ancestors who transformed into stone to watch over the land and guard the entrance to the spirit world or underworld.

I started my hike on the Siphon Draw Trail at 9:43 AM. Then it took me 19 minutes to reach the junction of Jacob's Crosscut Trail. Next, I reached the Siphon Draw at 10:46 AM, which was 2 miles from the trailhead. I reached the saddle at 12:14 PM, and it had taken me 2.5 hours. Then I hiked up to the end of the Flatiron. It was 12:24 PM when I stood near the edge. After that I spent at least an hour resting and wandering about. My hike was 6.2 miles round-trip, and it took me 5 hours and 58 minutes.

 

The Flatiron - Superstition Mountains

I hiked up the Flatiron for the fourth time. This time was the easiest too. I made it up to the Flatiron in 2 hours and 30 minutes. After taking a break, I headed to the Superstition Ridgeline Trail, and followed that for about 1 mile to an overlook of Monument Canyon. At 12:40 PM, I began my hike back down. It was 1:05 PM, I reached the saddle at the Flatiron, and began the steep descent. I reached Jacob's Crosscut Trail at 2:57 PM, and followed the trail back to Lost Dutchman State Park. I arrived back at my mini van at 3:23 PM. My hike was 7.3 miles round-trip, and it took me 7 hours and 45 minutes.
